Public Participation Wikithon Competition #1
MENTAL HEALTH
Let’s Compete in Writing Opinion and Creating Poster in Makassarese or Buginese
The Competition’s Topic Question is:
How do we create an environment that supports mental health?
Submission period: Feb 1–28, 2025
Mental health is an important foundation for individual and societal well-being. The challenges faced in the modern era are increasingly complex, with high work demands, financial problems, complicated interpersonal relationships, and excessive use of social media. According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report, more than 300 million people in the world experience depression, while around 264 million people live with anxiety disorders. In Indonesia, the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) noted that 9.8% of the population aged 15 years and above experienced mental emotional disorders, with around 7 million people suffering from depression. This data shows the importance of real action to address mental health in a comprehensive and sustainable manner.
Unfortunately, negative stigma and lack of access to mental health services remain a major challenge. Only a small percentage of affected individuals have adequate access to mental health support services. Social environments that are supposed to be safe havens often exacerbate the condition through social pressure and discrimination. Therefore, there is a need for practical and easy-to-implement policies to effectively create a supportive environment for mental health.
This idea is even more relevant in the context of Wikithon Public Participation 2025, which aims to encourage the public to voice ideas, thoughts and creative solutions related to mental health. Active participation from various elements of society, ranging from individuals, communities, to institutions, is expected to produce practical and impactful policy recommendations. These ideas can include community programs, anti-stigma campaigns, mental health training for educators, and the development of digital applications for early detection of mental health problems.
By prioritizing real solutions/actions that can be implemented, Wikithon Public Participation 2025 plays an important role in encouraging the birth of policies that are not only conceptually relevant but can also be implemented in the field. Selected works will be compiled into a public policy document in the form of a Policy Brief. The policy brief is compiled collaboratively including wikithon winners, judges, youth communities, and the government. The recommendations produced through this policy brief will be submitted to the government, as well as related parties, as a strategic step in building a society that is more caring, inclusive, and supportive of mental health. As the next concrete action, BASAsulsel Wiki facilitates the implementation of dissemination, the dissemination of ideas contained in the policy paper (policy brief) of the policy dialog results both online and offline, to various places through collaboration with the government, youth groups, communities and related parties. This step aims to ensure that the recommendations that have been formulated are widely conveyed to the community.
The scope of Wikithon Public Participation 2025 is designed to cover various aspects that are relevant in supporting public mental health. With the established subthemes, participants are expected to develop ideas and practical solutions that can be implemented by various parties, including the government, communities, and related institutions.
